It's done by the great and the not-so-great. There are times when an average pitcher will briefly be glorified by this achievement. It is not an honor reserved totally for the great pitchers.
Today at Kauffman Stadium, Todd Wellemeyer of the Royals reveled in the glory of a no-hitter. Today he was the best he could be. He held San Francisco hitless and beat them 3-0.
One of the Giants told reporters after the game, "Everything was working for him. When that happens, everything is going your way. He was in command."
Wellemeyer rung up 8 strikeouts, issued 2 walks and faced only 31 hitters in his historic outing.
After the game in the Kansas City locker room, he spoke to reporters. "I really got nervous in the last inning. I knew I had a chance at a no-hitter. It was hard to stay calm and concentrate. Thank goodness for my catcher. He told me to just to concentrate on hitting his glove. He would do all of the thinking."
In 2010 Wellemeyer has logged 3 wins and 5 losses and struck out 54 batters in 65.1 innings while compiling a 5.92 ERA. | | Saturday, June 5th, 2010: Royals Ink CL Dubose to Extension Happy times in Kansas City as the Royals and star closer Eric Dubose put the finishing touches on a $33,850,000 contract extension that will keep the 34-year-old in town 4 years longer.
The signing is great news for Kansas City, because players of this caliber are hard to come by.
To date this season Dubose has 11 saves with a 1-1 mark and 2.16 ERA. | | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 45-26, .634 PCT | | Position in Division | 2nd, 2.5 GB | | Record at home | 24-12, .667 PCT | | Record on the road | 21-14, .600 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 8-2, .800 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 10-6, .625 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 13-5, .722 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 32-21, .604 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 5-5, .500 PCT | | Record in April | 15-10, .600 PCT | | Record in May | 20-8, .714 PCT | | Record in June | 10-8, .556 PCT |
